Feminism is individualism

For the umpteenth time: there is no difference between feminism and individualism. Feminism is individualism applied specifically to situations and circumstances faced by women.

Case 1: When I support decision of a woman to not work, I am doing it because of my “belief in feminism.”

Case 2: When I criticise another women’s decision to not work because “one of us has to stay at home and take care of the kids,” I am also doing it because of my “belief in feminism.”

The difference is that first is an example of choice excercised voluntarily; second is usually not.

You cannot take away circumstances and argue the same way. A guy choosing to stay at home is being as individualistic in either of the cases above. A gal choosing the stay because of the second reason often (though, not always) is not individualism; she is often (again, not always) coaxed implicitly (often, explicitly as well) by the expectations of the historically held social mores.

One Response to “Feminism is individualism”

  1. Your blog was a great read.

My reactions went like this: “Oh, this person writes well! “, “Oh, he’s from IIT!”, “Oh, he’s a prof!” :P

Great to know that you’ve chosen to become a prof.
